老人罗山木（石磊 饰）收到儿子罗家兴在美国毕业归来的信息，多年夙愿得偿，却因为心脏病突发与世长辞。家兴回国来家中看望，回忆起父亲对自己的教诲深感愧疚遗憾。原来，家兴（李羽田 饰）自幼顽皮，胸无大志，梦想是在戏院作领位，遭人讥笑。而父亲罗山木因为学历底下，虽然在银行勤勤恳恳，却始终难得升迁，因此他希望儿子不要步自己后尘，所以对他严加管教，希望可以出人头地。家兴少不更事，完全不懂父亲苦心，只知道与邻家男孩厮混，两人翘课看戏，屡屡犯禁，闯祸无数，最终连续5次被退学，却依旧玩心不死。他高考落榜，背着父亲去考艺校，令老人极为失望。最终，罗山木做出了一个极为艰难的决定，这场命运的交易也最终让家兴开始发奋读书……
本片获得第1届香港电影金像奖最佳影片，方育平摘得最佳导演。
