年轻恋人兼剧场拍档携手编导新作，可惜旧心结未解，新分歧又浮现，她渴望沟通，他却紧闭心扉。二人犹如两架并行列车，方向相近却总是若即若离，随时分道扬镳。排戏期间适逢战争蓄势待发，演员各持立场而顿生磨擦，公演面临重大危机。
滨口龙介的漫长电影初尝试，与他执教的戏剧学院学生共同创作，通过绵密对白和诗歌，探讨人际关系复杂面貌，俯拾皆是《欢乐时光》《驾驶我的车》等日后代表作的元素。
电影上半部虚构创作及排戏过程，下半部则携来现实中的舞台剧演出，前后篇章虚实融合，耐心营造日常感，展现滨口创作轨迹。
电影将语言比喻为盛载想像力的列车，于各站停靠，连系起疏离的个体；深刻对话贯穿街头漫步和剧场时光，道尽亲密关系里的柔情、隔膜和矛盾。由黑夜拍至破晓的17分钟长镜头交谈，更尽显导演才华。
