河中叛将孙飞虎，知崔莺莺貌美，兵围普救寺，欲掠之。崔夫人于危急中誓言：“有人能退去贼兵，愿倒赔妆奁，将莺莺之为妻。”张珙有挚友白马将军杜确，统兵镇守蒲关，乃修书一封，命寺僧惠明下书往邀杜确前来解围。杜确剿灭孙飞虎之后，张珙本思与崔莺莺结成夫妇，岂知崔夫人嫌其为白衣秀士，悔却前言，借词推托。张珙与崔莺莺两心怏怏，红娘乃往来传书递柬，先使二人在花园相会，继之更促成二人婚事，共度佳期。事为崔夫人闻知，怒笞红娘。红娘据理申辩，并责崔夫人出尔反尔之过，终使崔夫人张口结舌，无言以对，依红娘之见，准张珙与崔莺莺结亲，但须张珙赴试高中之后，始允成礼。张珙遂离河中，取路入都。至此，张珙与崔莺莺之事，告一段落。
