电影讲述了一个鲜为人知的故事。1933 年，一位野心勃勃的威尔士年轻记者加雷斯·琼斯（Gareth Jones）来到苏联旅行，发现了共产主义乌托邦神话后骇人听闻的现实。由此他开始进行一项常规海角社区交友APP下载调查，但试图在政府掩盖下挖掘乌克兰饥荒的真相很快变成了生死攸关的探索。
他的努力不仅受到苏联审查机关的挫败，而且受到对斯大林政权抱有好感的西方记者的阻挠，这其中最有名的就是时任《纽约时报》莫斯科分部的总编辑沃特·杜兰蒂（Walter Duranty）。
