1955年，信雄（朝原靖贵饰）和父亲（田村高广饰）、母亲（藤田弓子饰）住在一起，一家人在大阪泥河边开着一家小饭馆。赶马车干苦力活的叔叔、夜晚捕鱼的不知名男子，寡言的信雄用眼睛注视着这些贫民区的人们。一个雨天，信雄认识了住在他家饭馆河岸对面一艘房船上生活的喜一（樱井稔饰），还有她的姐姐银子（柴田真生子饰），他们快成为好朋友。然而，喜一的母亲（加贺雅子饰）由于某种难以启齿的原因遭到周围人鄙夷，使姐弟俩人的脸上总是有着阴郁不快的神情，然而他们却很懂事，也来信雄家串门做客。直到有一天，信雄的父亲突然出门。信雄在船上意外窥见了无法承受的秘密……
