杰克（约翰·西姆 John Simm 饰）本是一名在洛杉矶供职的警察，却在误打误撞之下因为一本畅销书而扬名立万。之后，杰克辞去了警察的工作，和妻子艾米（米拉·索维诺 Mira Sorvino 饰）搬到了风景秀美的西雅图，在那里专心的从事写作。然而，现实却不如杰克所想的那么美好，他的写作遭遇了瓶颈期，久久无法突破，和妻子之间原本亲密的感情也因此变得冷漠疏离。
