与丈夫离婚后，女儿以“跟着学京戏”为由将10岁的儿子京京（费洋）丢给了早年丧妻今独自在南方城市生活的老父亲（朱旭）。多年前，名噪一时的京戏琴师父亲因不满女儿婚事及对京戏的逃避，与之心生罅隙，祖孙两人初见尴尬之外，他对京京还有种莫名的怨恨。无意间知道女儿已同丈夫离婚时，父亲对京京愧疚之外多出怜爱，祖孙两人情感日趋正常。
祖孙两人渡江拜会也是独自生活的佛教徒莲姑（王玉梅），莲姑一席话让京京初识人生，心细的他也发现外公与莲姑早已相敬如夫妻。莲姑收到杳无音信40年的丈夫从台湾寄来的信件，外公一时心重如山，但莲姑并没等来她的丈夫而是听到噩耗，不久也重病不治故去。弥留之际，莲姑表示对外公多年的照顾不胜感激，并希望他能替自己超度。为了帮莲姑达成心愿，外公忍痛欲卖胡琴，这时，京京给了他意外的感动。
