四十年前，李美松（王洪光 饰）当上了家乡的护林员。美丽的村姑爱上了看上去又憨又傻的护林员李美松，精明霸气的青年张雄（刘景范 饰）感到愤愤不平。李美松几十年如一日，拿着微薄的工资，守护着这片山林，跟张雄等想毁林发财的人做着各种斗争。进入老年的李美松和张雄仍然明争暗斗，恶势力看似在表面上占了上风，但最终张雄的淫威仍屈服在李美松的凌然正气前面。而李美松的宽容与大度，也彻底化解了张雄数十年的积怨，使他再出狱后成为了一名企业家，并且分享着森林给予的恩惠。
